In its efforts at poverty reduction/ eradication and women empowerment, THE DEWDROP FOUNDATION initiated a beekeeping project for human resource development and empowerment of Ushafa women in February, 2004.
USHAFA is a small Gwari village in the Bwari Area Council of the FCT with a population of approximately 900.
USHAFA is presently known for its legendary pottery and clay work. The women in this community are also known for local hunting of honey, which they sell to the public virtually in its raw form. So far, there has been very little revenue yield for the local inhabitants.
DEWDROP FOUNDATION therefore identifies and selected USHAFA as an ideal community as our model village for a sustainable women and youth empowerment program that would benefit the community.
During the first phase of this project, we conducted an awareness campaign to enlighten the community on the advantages of harnessing the potentials in Agro/ cultural bases development. The foundation is currently working on establishing a beekeeping skills acquisition centre for Ushafa women. The project has been very much delayed due to inadequate resources and lack of time.
The project is aimed at boosting their revenue generating potential and mitigating the effects of poverty on the community.
The first awareness campaign took place on the 23 rd November, 2003 at the palace of the ESU of USHAFA.
In attendance were:
Dewdrop project coordinator
