Women

We advocate for ending violence against women and children, financial inclusion, and transformative, sustainable and inclusive governance with special attention to women’s leadership in communities deeply rooted in patriarchal structures. These interventions seek to achieve mind-set and behavioural change, as well as support communities to review their constitutions from a gender friendly perspective.

In pursuance of the principles of gender equality and rights, DDF aims at promoting inclusive governance, empowering women to participate in political/leadership decision making processes; strengthen their capacity to defend their human rights; and increase their economic capacity to contribute effectively to their family’s socio-economic needs.

Special attention is given to promoting and implementing a zero tolerance policy to sexual violence and other gender-based abuses, especially those rooted in obnoxious cultural traditions; and multiple challenges faced by ageing women.

Workshops are also held in schools and communities with psychologists and training experts targeting at young girls to teach them about Sex Education, domestic violence, abusive relationships, and self-esteem WHEN they are YOUNG; and better prepare them for the life-long challenges, opportunities and responsibilities ahead.

DDF’s significant 2019 ground-breaking integration of women into the governance structure and key decision-making organs of Umuode community that had hitherto being totally male dominated and parochial is being maintained. Two (2) duly elected women representatives are members of the Traditional Ruler’s Council, the Town Union Executive, and the Umuode “Leaders of Thought”. DDF has continued to provide guidance and create leadership training opportunities for them.
